The inclusion in this alexandrite is a mineral called fluorite. Fluorite is a gemstone that comes in many colors, so that makes this a gemstone within a gemstone! - Photo by John I. Koivula/GIA
This inclusion is a hollow space within a gem, called a negative crystal. It’s the same shape as the crystal structure of the alexandrite that surrounds it, and it contains a liquid and a gas.
